Benjamin G. Gordon, Jr., known to many as “Chef Benny,” was born in Baltimore.
With two parents that loved to cook, it was natural for Benny to develop an affinity for
food at an early age. As a teenager, Benny was already working in restaurants--washing
dishes or cleaning the floors--just to be near a professional kitchen. It didn’t take long before
he decided that not only did he want to cook, but he also wanted to own a restaurant. After
completing high school, Benny attended the Baltimore International Culinary
Arts Institute (now the Baltimore International College School of Culinary Arts), graduating in 1983.
With the help of his parents, Dr. Benjamin and Shirley Gordon, Benny opened his first restaurant at the age of 21. Benny’s 2110, serving country French cuisine, soon became the talk of the town, frequently being featured in local and national publications. In addition to his local clientele, Chef Benny prepared meals for celebrities such as Oprah, Patti LaBelle, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Richard Dreyfuss, Charles "Rock" Dutton, Rachelle Ferrell, and Baltimore’s current Comptroller William Donald Schaefer. Benny later opened Chez Charles which offered nouvelle French cuisine. His third and most popular restaurant was Benny’s Jazz Club, a Cajun Restaurant with cornbread that many considered second to none. Benny became the Chef of the Baltimore Convention Center, teaching and cooking for thousands of guests from all over the country. Additionally, he was the youngest chef and restaurateur to be nominated and accepted to membership of the Chaine Des Rotisseurs, an international gourmet society. Currently, Benny is the official Chef for the Black Professional Men, Inc. in Baltimore. As the national spokesperson for Lawry’s Seasonings, Chef Benny went from local chef to a media celebrity being featured in national publications, local and national radio and making television appearances. Benny is now the owner of Gordon Foods. Through this company, he provides catering services for both large and intimate affairs, consulting services for individuals and business owners, cooking classes, systems development, and implementation for food service companies. He has received numerous contracts, including one to feed the homeless in Baltimore City. His dedication to his craft and his compassion for the less-fortunate has earned Chef Benny recognition for his community service in and around Baltimore, as well as many awards, citations, and commendations. Chef Benny has written several cook booklets and is in the process of completing a romance-themed cookbook. In his spare time, Chef Benny can be found roller skating or l looking for new ideas on how to improve his services. As a former drag racer, basketball and football player, energetic Benny also enjoys working out and other athletic pursuits. |
